Hi. I'm Alex Miller
// an editorial designer //
I'm the lead front page designer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and I've been creating eye-catching news pages for the past decade at the Chattanooga Times Free Press, The Daytona Beach News-Journal and the Hawaii Tribune-Herald. I've also served as design chief for Fifth Wednesday Journal, an influential literary magazine out of Chicago.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette takes an aggressively traditional approach to design. How traditional? Its preferred headline typeface is Bodoni-- and it's been that way since the nineteenth century. The editors expect clean, well organized pages without a lot of special effects. Designing for the Post-Gazette is an exercise in wringing the most out of the fundamental elements of news design -- photography and typography.
CHATTANOOGA TIMES FREE PRESS
Chattanooga's daily newspaper has embraced design wholeheartedly. The editors equip their designers with the right tools and give them the freedom and encouragement to do great work. The Times Free Press is one of those rare newspapers that actually looks fun to read, and -- not surprisingly -- it wins tons of award for design.
FIFTH WEDNESDAY JOURNAL
I served as chief of design for Fifth Wednesday Journal for two years and had the honor of collaborating with a talented group of writers and photographers. I overhauled the design of the journal with the aim of presenting the literary works within it with the seriousness and sophistication they deserved.
Here's a bunch of my best pages from the Chattanooga Times Free Press, The Daytona Beach News-Journal and Hawaii Tribune-Herald.
